Starkville native Rosemary Jones has been named MacGown Art’s next artist in residence, bringing her interest in fashion design, fiber arts, painting, dance, and poetry to the creative space from Nov. 4-18. A meet and greet will be hosted on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the MacGown Art Retreat and Studio, located at 211 Sessums Rd, with a follow-up show planned for Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Del Rendon Space.

Jones has been creating since childhood, finding her first outlet in writing, where she discovered a passion for animating characters and crafting imaginative stories.

“I’ve been making art since I’ve been able to put hands to paper, but began taking my creative practices seriously within the past seven years. My first outlet as a child was writing; I loved creating short stories, animating and bringing the characters to life, and felt as if this piece of my imagination was as real as could be,” Jones said.

Over time, her creative focus expanded into visual and performance arts, particularly influenced by her interest in sustainable fashion. Her secondhand clothing business, Pink Plaid, has participated in a dozen fashion shows since its founding in 2020, each entirely secondhand.

“Clothing has always drawn me in; something that may appear as a mundane daily task can, in fact, be an essence of storytelling,” Jones explained.

Her creative process varies by medium but remains centered on circulation and movement. In fashion, she deconstructs existing garments to reimagine them as unique pieces, highlighting the intersection between sustainability and style.

“Within my fashion design and fiber arts, I go through a process of deconstruction, which entails the breaking down of a previous garment of fabric, to then create a new pattern or assembly for it,” she said.
