Feb. 17—The University of New Mexico’s Department of Art announced contemporary painter Larry Madrigal as the Spring 2025 Frederick Hammersley Visiting Artist. This prestigious program, named after the influential artist Frederick Hammersley, brings contemporary artists to UNM to engage with students, faculty and the broader Albuquerque arts community.

Madrigal, a Los Angeles-born, Mexican American painter now based in Phoenix, Arizona, is known for his thought-provoking depictions of everyday life. His work reinterprets historical genre painting through a contemporary lens, exploring themes of masculinity, family life and the complexities of human relationships. His pieces, drawn from his own experiences of starting and raising a family, capture the beauty and struggles of daily existence with remarkable depth and authenticity.

With a Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University, Madrigal has showcased his work across the globe, with solo exhibitions in Madrid, Los Angeles, New York, Bucharest and beyond. His paintings, which challenge and celebrate the intricacies of normalcy, have earned him recognition as one of today’s most compelling voices in contemporary figurative painting. He is currently represented by Nicodim Gallery.

Don’t miss these special events:

Artist Talk: 5-6 p.m. Feb. 20 at Albuquerque Museum, 2000 Mountain Road Northwest. Join Larry Madrigal for this engaging talk. This event is free and open to the public, offering a unique opportunity to gain insight into Madrigal’s artistic process and influences.

Open Studio: 3-6 p.m. April 24 at the Art Annex, 1901 Central Ave., Northeast. Experience an intimate look into the artist’s work at an Open Studio event. This gathering provides a chance for the creative community to connect with Madrigal and explore his artistic journey firsthand.
