NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore safely returned to Earth on Tuesday, splashing down off the coast of Florida. Their return marked the end of a 17-hour journey and a nearly 10-month stay aboard the International Space Station.
Initially scheduled for an eight-day mission, the astronauts launched on June 5, 2024. However, their stay was extended to an unexpected 286 days due to unforeseen technical challenges.
Mithila Painting Depicts Sunita Williams’ Return
An artist from Samastipur has commemorated this significant event for NASA and the scientific community with a unique Mithila painting depicting Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams’ return.

The painting showcases four astronauts returning to Earth from space. This creative representation has garnered considerable attention and praise for its artistry on social media.
Speaking to Local18, Kundan Kumar Roy explained his inspiration, stating, “I have always used Mithila painting to spread awareness. Sunita Williams has become an inspiration for people worldwide. Her nine-month-long space mission, her research, and her triumphant return to Earth are truly remarkable and praiseworthy. Seeing her struggle and journey, I felt compelled to depict it through Mithila painting.”
Took One-and-a-Half Days to Complete
When asked about the time invested in creating the painting, Kundan revealed that it took him approximately one-and-a-half days to complete. He explained, “Mithila painting demands intricate detailing and patience, which naturally takes time.”
Reflecting on his artistic journey, he shared, “I inherited this art from my mother, who was also a Mithila painting artist. I learned this craft from her and have dedicated my life to preserving and practising this beautiful tradition.”
