A Sheffield-based artist known for his striking public murals is returning to the North East with a new collaboration.

Andy Welland, who created a 90-metre mural on Newcastle’s Quayside last year, is launching Colour, Play and Everything In-Between at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Running from April 12 to September 28, the pop-up shop will feature vibrant paintings, prints and exclusive merchandise inspired by kaleidoscopic patterns

The display will transform Baltic Shop’s main window with 12 new artworks, while inside, visitors can explore pieces from Andy’s Loose Ends series.

A limited edition A3 print, alongside smaller works and collectible items such as tote bags and a range of pin badges, will be available to buy.

Andy, whose work encourages audiences to slow down and engage with colour and form in new ways, said: “Play has always been an important part of my work, and this collaboration is all about celebrating that unique, special feeling that comes from exploring life through play.

“I first started creating art by playing around with colours, forms and shapes, and that joy and freedom of expression you get when you’re playing is something I always want to capture.

“I want people to experience the human element of creating art and experience that feeling of standing in front of something and seeing how someone’s hands have made it.”

Sara Ley, head of trading at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, added: “Andy’s use of bold and bright colours makes his work so impactful and pleasing to the eye.

“Anyone that visited the Newcastle Quayside last year will know how vibrant and exciting his artwork is.

“Now that spring has officially arrived, I can’t think of a better time to showcase his joyful and energetic work.”
