The general students of Dhaka University’s Fine Arts faculty have rejected this year’s Pahela Baishakh celebrations by terming the event as politically motivated and ridden with nepotism.
“We, the students of the Fine Arts faculty, have decided to reject this year’s Pahela Baishakh celebrations and its organising committee for practicing nepotism and serving political interests,” a press release issued by the students today (26 March) reads.
In the press release, the students said they were not consulted while this year’s Noboborsho celebrations were being planned.
“Every year, the Pahela Baishakh celebration is organised through the joint efforts of the Fine Arts students and the faculty members. But this year, the celebration was planned only by the teachers without any participation of the students, which is contrary to our beliefs and concepts,” the press release says.
About incorporating Abu Saeed’s structure in the Pahela Baishakh celebrations, the students said in the press release that they were not informed about the decision and will not take any responsibility for the criticism that has ensured on social media regarding the matter.
“The Fine Arts students were not involved with the decision of having Abu Saeed’s structure during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations. The entire responsibility falls on the shoulders of the faculty members and the organisers,” the press release added.
