Westhoughton stationmaster turned travel into an art form

Mr S E Jones brightened up the platform with crayon and pastel sketches which he illustrated the various excursions and trips available to passengers in 1949.


Mr Jones with his sketches at Westhoughton Station, 1949 (Picture: Newsquest)Each picture was done on a small blackboard and the displays included Conwy Castle, Snowdon and even Blackpool Illuminations.

A keen amateur artist, Mr Jones often gave away his paintings and drawings as presents.

It’s fascinating to see the cost of excursions on offer – a trip to Llandudno was 17/5 and an Anglesey day cruise 19/11.
