Our favourite AI humanoid robot, Ai-Da, is once again making waves in the art world—this time with a portrait of the UK monarch King Charles III. The painting, entitled Algorithm King, was revealed this week at the UK Mission in Geneva as part of the 2025 “AI for Good Summit” hosted by the UN.

“Presenting my portrait of His Majesty King Charles III is not just a creative act, it’s a statement about the evolving role of AI in our society, and to reflect on how artificial intelligence is shaping the cultural landscape,” Ai-Da says (in a robotic statement). Ai-Da previously painted the late Queen Elizabeth II in a portrait titled Algorithm Queen.

Ai-Da, the artist robot and brainchild of Oxford gallerist Aidan Meller, is on a roll, smashing the record last November for a work of art created by a robot (her painting A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing, 2024, sold for more than £1m at Sotheby’s New York).

Ai-Da, who was assigned a female gender, paints with the help of cameras in her eyes and mechanical arms. Her robotic reach goes beyond arty pursuits too: in 2022, members of the House of Lords in the UK parliament heard from Ai-Da as part of their enquiry into the future of the UK’s creative industries.
