The Secret to Hunter Schafer’s Timeless Emmy Glam, According to Her Makeup Artist (Exclusive)

When actress and model Hunter Schafer attended the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards last Sunday, her look turned heads for all the right reasons.

The Euphoria star attended the Emmys in Los Angeles to present an award, stunning the red carpet in a magenta floor-length Alexander McQueen dress, accessorized with a pair of diamond dangling earrings, natural makeup and a sleek straight hairstyle.

One of the people behind the magic of Schafer’s look was New York City-based makeup artist Carolina Dalí, who has worked with the actress on multiple occasions. For her Emmys look, she exclusively told Parade that she drew inspiration from old Hollywood icons like Veronica Lake and Grace Kelly, but also wanted to stay true to Schafer’s natural beauty.

“I’ve always loved a more natural-looking and pared-back approach to skin,” Dalí wrote in an email. “My goal was to accentuate and highlight Hunter’s beautiful features.”

For the 26-year-old actress’s look, Dalí collaborated with Revlon Cosmetics, using products such as their ColorStay Flex Wear Concealer and ColorStay Face & Body Glow Lotion to prep her skin and add a healthy, natural glow, as well as the Revlon ColorStay Day to Night eyeshadow palette for her simple eye makeup look. But the hero product that really brought the look together? Revlon’s Lustrous Glass Shine Balm in the shade Glossed Up Rose.

“It kept her lips hydrated and added the perfect hint of pink,” said Dalí, which matched her dress and tied Schafer’s look together perfectly.

Dalí’s love for makeup first started when she was 11 or 12 years old, and she first started buying makeup products to study the painting techniques of her favorite artists, which she listed as Gustav Klimt, Michelangelo, Frida Kahlo, Caravaggio and Sandro Botticelli. As a kid, she loved painting and drawing, and was convinced that she was going to be an artist, fashion designer, or architect like her grandfather when she was older.

For Halloween one year, she did her friends’ makeup and turned them all into different characters. The photos quickly circulated around her high school, earning compliments from other students and teachers. A couple of weeks later, a classmate sent Dalí a makeup artist job opening. Despite having no professional experience, she set up an interview, completed a trial with the beauty boutique owner and was hired on the spot.

“Makeup found me, I fell in love with it,” wrote Dalí.

Since then, she has worked with major brands like Dior, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as celebrities including Schafer, Mikey Madison, Laufey, Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Sydney Sweeney, Storm Reid and many more. Her work has also appeared in V Magazine, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Interview.

After years of working with top brands and celebrities, Dalí has some advice for aspiring makeup artists hoping to break into the industry.

“Go into every job like it’s the most important job you’ve ever had, with appreciation and a positive mindset,” she emphasized. “This business is mostly word of mouth. I didn’t know a single person or had any connections coming in. Getting recommendations is how I built my clientele. At first, say yes to everything in order to expand your network and build more relationships. Always show up at least 15 mins early to set up, make sure your kit is spotless and organized.”
