Five exciting talents from the Royal College of Arts have been named winners in the first-ever Jaguar Arts Awards.

The prize, which was announced in May this year, asked Masters students in Fine and Applied Arts to respond to the prompt “Copy Nothing”, inspired by the ethos of the Jaguar founder William Lyons, promoting originality and imaginative creation.

While all five artists have been awarded bursaries that support their progress as independent artists, one in particular was given the highest honour. Jobe Burns was presented with the Gerry McGovern Award for his sculpture, titled Intimate Conversation. Using two luminously painted pieces of scrap steel and aluminium to create two shifting forms, the piece makes dynamic use of colour.

The runner-up, the multidisciplinary artist Yvann Zahui, presented his triptych Auto-Portraits, a chromatic photographic piece that imagines the car as an extension of the self. Three additional Jaguar Awards were given in recognition: to Emma Goring for the Venetian cane-inspired Modern Tradition; Ali Bartlett for her vivid oil-on-shower-curtain Illuminated Silence; and Annabel MacIver for her five ink prints Colour Wheel.

Selected by a jury of experts, led by the Jaguar chief creative officer and former RCA student Gerry McGovern, the furniture designer Lewis Kemmino and the visual artist Ken Nwadiogbu, as well as other RCA alumni, the awards look to bolster the practice of artists who boldly create work outside of the box.
