Alternative life drawing and DIY film-making among classes at the Albert Dock gallery

Visitors to Tate Liverpool this month will be encouraged to ‘feel the burn’ and raise their ‘art rate’ with the arrival of the Art Gym today.

Members of the Tate Collective have joined forces with Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble to create the three-week programme of free drop-in classes, lectures and workshops that cover art, design, music and film.

Rather than rowing machines, running machines and weights, there will be ‘art stations’ teaching everything from digital art production to traditional bookmaking.

While artists host a series of free workshops to teach and develop skills including photography, critical writing, craft work and alternative life drawing, young representatives of Tate Collective and the gallery’s visitor assistant team will act as Art Gym instructors.

Tate Collective Liverpool is a youth art initiative by and for young people aged 15 to 25.

Member Holly Bowers said: ‘We don’t want the public to think of the arts as an elitist community – anyone can enjoy it.”

Events over the next three weeks include film and photography on your mobile phone (March 8), build a pinhole camera (March 13 and 20), Granby: woodblocking print workshop (March 21) and alternative life drawing (March 24).

There’s also an Easter chocolate hunt on March 27-28.

The Art Gym runs until March 31 and is free. More HERE
