Starry ‘Art’ Revival Recoups Broadway Investment

Producers of the first-ever Broadway revival of Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning play Art starring Bobby Cannavale, James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris say the production has recouped its capitalization.

The production was capitalized at $6.75 million.

Directed by Scott Ellis, Art, translated by Christopher Hampton, opened at the Music Box Theatre on September 16; the limited engagement will end December 21.

Well received by critics, the starry Art has been pulling in big audiences since beginning previews on August 28. Grosses for the week ending December 7 – the most recent available figures – reached $1,594,034, with 99% of seats filled and an average ticket price of $202.39.

The synopsis: “Three longtime friends. One ridiculously expensive painting. Is it art, or is it just the world’s priciest inside joke? What begins as a polite debate over aesthetics and taste devolves into a clash of egos and resentments. Can their friendship survive, or will one of them finally draw the line? It’s just 100 minutes of minimalist art, maximalist laughs, and a moving look at what we really see and forgive in the people we love.”

Recently, Art raised a total of $188,905 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids during the organization’s Red Bucket Fall Fundraising Campaign.

Art is produced by Sand & Snow Entertainment (Michael Shulman), ATG Productions and Gavin Kalin Productions.
