Illinois will be investing over $325,000 in public art projects statewide, including in Rockford, to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and boost local cultural economies.

Governor JB Pritzker, alongside the Illinois Arts Council and Illinois Humanities, has announced funding for 22 public art projects across Illinois.

The initiative is part of the broader Illinois America 250 Commission effort marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
State leaders say the investment is designed to amplify local stories while reinforcing Illinois’ role in the nation’s history. The selected projects span diverse communities, aiming to reflect cultural heritage and untold narratives through permanent public works.
Local Impact: Rockford and Northern Illinois Included
Communities across the state, from Elgin to East St. Louis, are set to benefit, including Rockford and Freeport. Locally, the Freeport Art Center and the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Foundation each secured $15,000 grants.
Officials emphasize that beyond beautification, these projects are expected to stimulate economic activity by attracting visitors and supporting local artists.

Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton highlighted the role of art in elevating voices that might otherwise go unheard, while IAC leadership pointed to the broader economic ripple effect tied to cultural investments.
