Exhibition of works by artist Ovezmukhammet Akmukhammedov “In Loving Memory of Father…”

The Exhibition Center of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan hosts a personal exhibition of paintings by the artist Ovezmukhammet Akmukhammedov, who marks his 55th birthday this year.

Ovezmukhammet is the son of Shamukhammet Akmukhammedov, People’s Artist of Turkmenistan, a professor at the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan, and a laureate of the Jawaharlal Nehru International Award. He dedicates this exhibition to the memory of his father.

In art, the creativity of both father and son inevitably invites comparisons from viewers. Additionally, the exhibition features a display of 10 works by Akmukhammedov Sr. It should be noted that Shamukhammet Akmukhammedov was an exceptionally original artist. The main feature of his work was the new shades of life in the 1970s. The professor did not step outside the bounds of realism accepted in those years, except perhaps in the painting “Autumn Rhapsody,” where sunlight dances on a carpet of autumn leaves.

Akmukhammedov Jr., having inherited originality from his father, has made his mark in contemporary art. In his paintings, executed in a decorative-graphic style, the predominance of circular lines seems to obscure the presence of the main subject – “Memory,” “Song,” “Meeting,” and others. In works such as “Nerves,” “Jamilya,” and others, the artist captures not the appearance of a person but looks inward, showing reactions occurring within us.

Particularly interesting in this regard is the work “Young and Green,” which features elements of abstractionism, cubism and expressionism. The artist depicted a portrait with one half consisting of a young person’s face and the other half an elderly person’s. Next to the young person is a small unripe apple, while beside the old person is a large ripe one.

When asked: “Is this painting about you and your father?”, Akmukhammedov Jr. replied: “You could say that”.

The personal exhibition of more than 70 works by Ovezmukhammet Akmukhammedov is intended for an audience that is well-prepared to carefully examine the paintings and unravel each one’s author’s intent. This reflects unique perspective of Akmukhammedov Jr. on the world around him.
