The artists behind such comic book hits as Batgirl of Burnside, Justice League, Batman ’89, and Spider-Man chat with Popverse about what it takes for a superhero design to live forever

Don’t miss MCM / EGX 2024, happening in October 25 through 27. Popverse will be there all three days, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more. Buy tickets now!

Sure, every major superhero has, at some point in their long history, changed up their looks. But for some of the most iconic, their basic design has not changed (or at least, is often returned to) in some 40, 60, even 80 years of existence. Popverse wanted to know what makes for such visual staples, so we gathered some of the best comic artists in the business to ask. Happening at MCM Comic Con London 2024, we’re continuing our Artist Alley Asks series with Babs Tarr, Eren Angiolini, Joe Quinones, and Lee Townsend.

The conversation is going down the last day of the convention: Sunday, October 27. We’ll be chatting with the artists of Batgirl of Burnside, Justice League, Batman ’89, and Spider-Man respectively (plus so much more) on the Artist Alley Stage starting at 3:15 PM BST. It’s a busy location at the ExCeL London Exhibition Centre, so make sure you’re there with some time to spare.

Worth noting too is that all of these artists have experience outside the realm of superhero comics as well – both Tarr and Angiolini have worked on Critical Role projects in the past, Quinones has tackled Firefly for Boom! in the past, and as anyone familiar with 2000 AD knows, Townsend is a Judge Dredd contributor. So while you’re sure to get plenty of cape-and-cowl insights from this gang, you can expect them to cover some fantasy and action ground as well.

Perhaps even some Doctor Who, if we’re lucky.

Popverse’s Artist Alley Asks, featuring Babs Tarr, Eren Angiolini, Joe Quinones, and Lee Townsend, happens at the ExCel London Artist Alley Stage, October 27 from 3:15 – 4:00 PM BST. Don’t miss it!

New York Comic Con is where you can explore an Artist Alley filled with hundreds of comic creators from legends like Jim Lee to up-and-coming talent. Commission unique art or get your personal collection signed October 17-20. Limited Thursday NYCC tickets are still on sale.
