A fresco mixing history, geography and pop culture at the Palais de Tokyo… The museum is devoting an exhibition to the artist Malala Andrialavidrazana in the large glass roof, entitled Figures, from October 17, 2024 to January 5, 2025. This monumental project, spanning almost 60 metres in length, is the artist’s first solo show in Paris. The work invites visitors on a journey across the world’s borders, while questioning representations of power and knowledge.

Known for her digital photomontages, Malala Andrialavidrazana has been creating works since 2015 that blend maps, banknotes, stamps and advertisements, revealing the tensions between modernity and colonial legacies. This exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo is an opportunity for the artist to reinterpret these iconographic archives on a monumental scale, adapted to the architecture of the venue. The Figures take on a new, multiplied dimension, offering the public an unprecedented reflection on the evolution of visual representations over the centuries.

Collage, as the artist explains, is“an art of conflict“, where sometimes contradictory realities meet and clash. This approach is at the heart of her work, where maps, tools of domination and knowledge, are deconstructed and questioned. Who is speaking? From what point of view? These fundamental questions are explored in the course of his compositions, inspired by iconographic sources from the 19th and 20th centuries.

To complement this exhibition, an interactive mediation system will be offered in collaboration with the Yavarhoussen Fund, enabling the public to learn more about the sources and inspirations of the work. A monograph devoted to Malala Andrialavidrazana ‘s recent work will also be published, in partnership with Editions Dilecta. A not-to-be-missed event for fans of contemporary art and geopolitical reflection.
