A makeup artist has shared the five pearls of wisdom she believes anyone who does their makeup will want to know, including shutting down primer rumours and lighting tips
Do you wish you could do your makeup exactly how people seem to always have theirs done on social media? A flawless base without creased concealer, perfect brows, and even a contoured nose without being too obvious. There are so many subtle tricks you can use to make your makeup sit better. And a makeup artist has shared her top five tips, because she refuses to “gatekeep” the knowledge she’s learned over the years.
Kaela Davidson, who posts on TikTok as @makeupbykaela, shares her amazing makeup transformations, showing how she takes people’s faces to another level of gorgeous every single time.
So, what are her top tips to elevate your makeup?
1. Primer
Kaela shared that you “do not need 12 different primers and a 23-step skincare routine to make your makeup last,” which is good news for people who don’t have these things.
She said that, typically, she’ll use “one primer and one moisturiser and some setting spray and it always does the trick”.
Kaela insisted that it’s all about “how you apply your makeup” saying “a good setting powder will do wonders for your longevity”.
2. Concealer
If you’re “struggling” to put concealer and powder on without it creasing, you’re “likely using too much product”.
Kaela said that you can’t completely stop creasing, as of course, everyone’s skin has texture, but she insisted that it “can be minimised”.
She said: “Instead, try applying the concealer on the back of your hand, and then onto a brush, then onto your face in small layers, rather than going straight in with the applicator on your face”.
3. Nose contour
Kaela said that nose contouring really can make all the difference when you’re doing your makeup; however, if you do it badly, it can make your whole makeup look awful.
She said that she prefers to do “reverse” contouring so you don’t get a “muddy” vibe with the bronzer.
Instead of using bronzer on either side of the nose, Kaela likes to put a “thin line of concealer down the centre” of the nose and blend it out.
“This will give you the snatched effect without any muddy-looking contour lines,” she reiterated.
4. Brows
Rather than doing your eyebrows first, Kaela recommends that you do them last.
She said that this helps her to “understand what to add” rather than them “looking overdone”. She said there’s a tendency to do them too strongly if you do them first, then you find yourself trying to make them look good throughout the rest of the makeup application process.
5. Good lighting
She also said that when it comes to taking pictures, especially if you’re a professional makeup artist, you can’t beat good lighting, and this is often what makes people’s makeup look so good.
Kaela admitted that when she first started, she used a “small ring light,” but it was a game-changer for her when she invested in “proper studio lighting”.
Of course, the average person isn’t going to get this, but if your photo is well-lit, it can make your face look even better.
