Joey La Mèche, 37, said that travelling the globe reignited his creative spark and on his return he began to transform parts of Norwich with his colourful artwork.

The artist said: “I want my murals to depict the city’s history.

“Norwich has so much historic architecture and protected spaces.

“Travelling taught me so much, we are standing on thousands of years of history.

“I want to celebrate that.”

Mr La Mèche is the artist behind the well-known City of Stories mural near the Castle and the Bodicca mural at Norwich Market.

More recently, he commissioned a piece for Guinness at Junkyard Market and has painted the signage for businesses in the city, including the Holloway and Lovisa.

He added: “My dad is an interior decorator.

“When I was in college he used to drag me to paint houses with him.

“I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a painter’.

“But he was so right, he taught me so many valuable skills.”

Mr La Mèche studied graphic design at City College in Norwich, then travelled to India and Australia, where he began experimenting with painting on a large scale.

He added, “I learnt a lot about mindfulness and meditation when I was abroad.

“I hope I can make people feel less weighed down by the weight of the world.

“It can be hard for people to understand the value of public artworks.

“My art is not graffiti.

“I want to encourage tourism and change people’s opinions around public art.”

Mr La Mèche has recently been working on a mural at St Saviour’s Yard, Norwich’s new box park development, which will house traders and artists.
