Following the hugely popular exhibition by Romanian artist Doru Ivan at Bray’s Signal Arts Centre, the venue is getting ready to host the work of another fascinating creator, this time from Latvia.

‘Old Songs of the North’ is the first solo exhibition by artist Santa Silina in Ireland.

She presents drawings and paintings inspired by the ancient atmosphere of Ireland and finds this connection with other countries of North Europe, particularly from her native country of Latvia.

Her artworks express her deep interest in the natural environment and habitat of the people of the North and her subconscious memories. Santa is interested in the cycle of life and how people connect with nature. Through her exploration of the history of culture and traditions, she is finding connections with the generations of the past and future.

Santa Silina is a Latvian visual artist, graphic designer and illustrator who has lived for nearly 20 years in Ireland. She is a successful scenography and costume designer, dedicating her time to Latvian theatre companies in Ireland and the UK.

She has a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, but during the lockdown, she decided to return to her first love – visual arts. Santa prefers drawing, especially pencil and charcoal, as her favourite media. As a staff artist at Signal Arts Centre, Santa teaches classes in classical drawing techniques.

The exhibition runs from Monday, October 14 to Sunday, October 27, with the opening reception taking place on Friday, October 18.
