On the corner wall of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church in London, just a stone’s throw from Oxford Street, one of the busiest shopping areas in Europe, a figure by British street artist Endless has been installed. The figure is of a rough sleeper, an individual experiencing homelessness, tucked into a sleeping bag with the text “210,000 Homeless today.” Installed within the context of one of the wealthiest areas of the city, the work confronts the harsh realities lived by thousands every day and cogently juxtaposes it with the city’s affluence.

Placed on the outer corner of the church, a site symbolically associated with sanctuary, morality, and service, the work is visible to not only congregants but anyone walking or driving by, making it an unmissable testament to one of the London’s most pressing issues. The inspiration behind it came from Endless’s own observations and experiences working across the city.
“Doing street art in London for the last decade,” said Endless in an interview with Indelible Fine Art, “I have seen firsthand the increase in homelessness, the city has become overwhelmed. I take a lot of inspiration from everything I see on the streets of London, and I had always wanted to make something powerful to represent this aspect of the city.”

Initially, Endless connected with the minister of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church on Instagram, and the personal relationship catalyzed the project, bringing together the church’s charitable activities and the artist’s social activism. The church runs a comprehensive night shelter program, and the artwork not only reflects the institutions ongoing efforts but foregrounds the need for more effort, assistance, and awareness beyond the church’s walls.
The work also showcases the artist’s unique relationship with the city of London itself, which has proven a perennial source of inspiration across his career. Endless noted, “For me, this work is very specific to London. I think all the world’s problems are reflected on the streets of London, and for me, London is my main focus as an artist, the energy, the stories, the contrasts, London is everything.”
