Artist fears solar farm at Glem Valley in Boxted, Sudbury

Plans to build a 108-acre solar farm at the land west of Boxted, near Sudbury, were submitted by Renewable Energy Systems (RES) in November 2023.

The tranquil valley has remained largely unchanged for more than 600 years, campaigners say.

But now, up to 85,000 panels are proposed to overshadow the land and be situated around 300 metres from the settlement.

RES argue that it would fit sensitively into the existing landscape and maximise low-cost electricity generation.

Suffolk artist Michael Carlo, whose work is in The Tate, has been painting the site for more than 40 years.

He said: “To enter the B1066 from the Long Melford end is to be consumed by one of the most beautiful valleys in England, hidden and unknown by so many people.

“The custodians of the Boxted Hall Estate are seeking to build a solar power station on a most spectacular area of the valley on the southern side, topped by the ancient Lownage wood.

“It is a landscape I have never tired of drawing, painting and etching.

“I hope to continue doing so for many years to come.”

The application has 246 objections, while a petition with around 650 names will be presented at a planning meeting expected soon.

A spokesperson for Save Glem Valley said: “You need only read the personal testimonies published on the Council website to understand the depth of feeling and belonging felt by local people – and visitors from all parts of the country.

“The location is seen for miles in all directions and Carlo’s landscape is part of the area’s cultural heritage, underscoring the importance of protecting local scenery from industrialisation.”

Claire Chamberlain, senior development project manager for RES, said “For over 40 years, RES has been developing, constructing and operating renewable energy projects of outstanding quality.

“Prior to submission, our Boxted solar farm proposal went through a detailed design process, taking feedback from the local community and stakeholders into account, to ensure it would fit sensitively into the existing landscape, whilst maximising the low-cost electricity generation.

“The proposal includes a comprehensive landscape management plan, which contains measures that will not only reduce potential visibility of the site but will transform areas into wildflower rich grassland and native woodland blocks. These enhanced habitats will provide vital resources for a wide range of fauna, crucial to a healthy eco-system.”
