Artist fundraised to gift Wolverhampton hospital children’s garden mural

An artist who offered to paint a hospital mural for free has admitted fundraising for it was harder than he expected.

Birmingham artist Mr Murals’ latest piece, on display in a children’s garden at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, depicts a seaside-theme, with seagulls, sandcastles and an array of creatures.

The artist, who previously created an artwork on the city’s Navigation Street with the original members of local band Black Sabbath, completed the mural on Monday.

Speaking to BBC Radio WM, the artist, whose real name is Daniel, said he was “really happy” with the final design, but added fundraising was harder than expected, despite having a large online audience.

Mr Murals said he had previously done artwork for the hospital but decided “this time, rather than giving the hospital a price for the artwork, I asked if I could fundraise for it myself”.

He added: “I could… kind of be creative, make some initial designs and then adjust things while I was in the space, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.”

The hospital garden has now been turned into a space that children and their families visiting the hospital can enjoy, including a new play area and outdoor cinema screen.

“Other people donated their skills, from gardeners to landscapers. The whole place was fully refurbished…. so there was a whole group of people that contributed to making the space really special.”
