On this day in 2024, the East Anglian Daily Times reported that an Essex artist showcased her latest collection, which included two Suffolk landscapes painted on pre-decimal coins.

Yvonne Jack, who works from her home, recreated John Constable’s Flatford Mill (1816-17) and the Hay Wain (1821).

Ms Jack had completed more than 50 paintings on coins at the time, with some of her work exhibited at the Bankside Gallery in London.

Each piece takes a few hours to finish.

Some of the painting Ms Jack has completed (Image: PA) Flatford Mill, now under the management of the National Trust, is nestled within the Dedham Vale countryside.

Ms Jack said: “It’s a very enjoyable process, the discipline of painting that small.”

“When I was a child, my mum had this painting of Flatford Mill on our lounge wall and when I look at it, it just takes you back there.”

The hamlet of Flatford is also known for being the setting of Constable’s Hay Wain, which depicts the River Stour.

Among other highlights from Ms Jack’s project is her painting of the Houses of Parliament, which was displayed at the Royal Miniature Society Annual Exhibition the previous year.
