Artist recreating Lincoln street on giant roll of paper

An architectural artist is recreating every detail of one of Lincoln’s oldest streets on a huge roll of paper in ink.

Matthew Wright, from Lincoln, said he had been inspired by the length and size of the Bayeux Tapestry to recreate the Bailgate in a way that celebrated the city and its architecture.

The street runs from Lincoln’s castle and cathedral to the Newport Arch, a 3rd Century Roman gate.

More than 20 buildings have listed status and some houses and shops date as far back as the 13th Century.

Mr Wright said his artwork, dubbed “the Bailgate Papestry”, would take between four and six months to complete.

He then plans to start on the other side of the street, with the ultimate aim of displaying the work in a local gallery.
