The painter and animator, who started working with sculpture only six months ago, has been commissioned to create a major public artwork for the festival.

His installation will be a towering hand made from woven willow, symbolising welcome and unity.

Mr Brewer said: “Working in willow sculpture is a new direction that’s felt immediate and necessary.

“This opportunity to develop a piece with and for the community is transformative.

“It’s not just my hand – it’s everyone’s.”

The eight-foot sculpture will be built live at the festival and will be interactive, allowing people to step inside the hand.

Workshops will also be held for people to help shape parts of the installation.

Andrea Francis, festival director for Arts by the Sea, said: “Bob is exactly why we created the associate artist role.

“To go from picking up willow six months ago to shaping one of the festival’s centrepieces is a story of sheer potential.”

The festival will run from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28.

There will be large-scale installations, music, dance, street theatre and more.

The full design of the sculpture will be revealed in the coming months.
