Boxing News Art Presented For The First Time At An International Art Fair

THE Wegerich Fine Art Collection, recognised as the world’s foremost art collection dedicated to boxing, will present selected works for the first time at an international art fair: the Discovery Art Fair Frankfurt (Germany), taking place from November 6 to 9, 2025.

The collection comprises more than 100 original artworks from the 1930s to the present day. Compiled over many years by Frankfurt-based attorney Ingo Wegerich, it combines artistic excellence with cultural and historical significance.

Each piece is an original and portrays legendary fighters and unforgettable bouts – from Joe Louis and Max Schmeling to Muhammad Ali and today’s champions. Many works were published as iconic magazine covers – including Boxing News and The Ring Magazine – or commissioned as official art for major international fights.

Following earlier exhibitions, including last year at the German Sport & Olympic Museum in Cologne, the collection will now be presented to an international art audience at a fair for the very first time.

“I am delighted to present works from our collection to an international audience at the Discovery Art Fair,” says Ingo Wegerich. “These works are not only artistically impressive, but also testimonies of sporting and cultural history – and in some cases even of world history.”

Exhibition Highlights

A highlight for UK boxing fans will be the original painting of the second fight between Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin (2018), created by renowned British artist Richard T. Slone. The work is especially significant as it became the first painted Boxing News cover in the magazine’s long history, marking a milestone in the visual culture of the sport.

Also on display is a work depicting Muhammad Ali in 1967, during the period when he refused military service – an image that appeared on the cover of The Ring Magazine. Ali’s stance, which at the time carried enormous political weight, still resonates today in light of ongoing global conflicts.

A further highlight is the original artwork commissioned by the official promoter for the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor (2017) – one of the most successful pay-per-view events in history, generating more than 600 million US dollars. This painting was likewise created by Richard T. Slone, the official artist of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

The exhibited works are not for sale. “These works are not to be measured in money,” emphasises Wegerich.

The Discovery Art Fair Frankfurt (Germany)

The Discovery Art Fair is one of Germany’s most important fairs for contemporary art. This year, more than 110 international exhibitors will present their works. The organisers expect over 12,000 visitors.

About the Wegerich Fine Art Collection

The Wegerich Fine Art Collection is the world’s leading art collection dedicated to the theme of boxing. It consists exclusively of original works dating from the 1930s to the present. Many of the pieces appeared on the covers of international magazines – including Boxing News and The Ring Magazine – or commissioned as official art for major international fights.

After being shown at the German Sport & Olympic Museum in 2024, the collection will now be presented at an international art fair for the first time. It bridges art history and sports history, portraying icons of boxing – from Schmeling and Louis to Muhammad Ali and today’s champions.
