Late modern ink artist Huang Binhong (1865-1955) is known for creating a highly expressive style in landscape painting, using various shades of ink to achieve a state of spirituality. He also left a body of work in the flower-and-bird genre of Chinese painting, creating a mood of serenity and elegance with just a few colors.

The exhibition Retrospect on the Journey, which opened at Beijing’s Guardian Art Center on Wednesday and runs until Sunday, showcases Huang’s creativity in both his landscapes and flower-and-bird paintings. All come from the collection of Huang’s family, showing not only paintings, drawings and sketches, but also letters to his children and grandchildren which demonstrate his scholarly integrity.

The exhibition is part of the ongoing Guardian Fine Art Asia. The annual expo has returned with an array of galleries and cultural institutions displaying a variety of artworks that celebrate craftsmanship, such as ceramics, lacquer objects, jewelries, furniture and fashion design.
