The artwork, designed by “renowned” visual artist Rana Begum, is set to be installed in Eastbourne’s regenerated Victoria Place.

The installation, spearheaded by art gallery Towner Eastbourne, is part of a broader pedestrianisation scheme led by East Sussex County Council, which aims to rejuvenate the area and boost visitor numbers.

The artwork is designed to be a focal point for visitors, creating a calm, reflective space at the end of the bustling high street.

The new artwork is part of the Victoria Place regeneration plan The new artwork is part of the Victoria Place regeneration plan (Image: Towner Eastbourne) The approved design features eight tall vertical panes of toughened coloured glass, arranged in a zigzag formation, protruding from the ground.

The structure is designed to interact with natural light, casting geometric shadows that change throughout the day and across the seasons, enhancing the environment and engaging the public.

The project, which received a grant from the UK Government, is hoping to provide a significant boost to the local area, supporting local businesses and enhancing the public space.

The area is also aiming to become a ‘Las Ramblas’ style pedestrianised route, with outdoor dining spaces and features designed to boost Eastbourne’s night-time economy.

The maintenance of the new artwork will be handled by Towner Eastbourne.

The design incorporates toughened laminated glass, which can withstand coastal conditions such as solar exposure, temperature changes, humidity, and sea spray.

The glass will also be coated with a Ritec ‘non-stick’ coating, ensuring long-lasting protection and making the glass easier to clean, stain-resistant, and maintaining clarity.

This level of durability is expected to protect the artwork from weathering, moisture, oxidation, atmospheric pollution, and graffiti.

Rana Begum, the artist behind the new installation, is known for her work that blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and architecture.

Born in Bangladesh in 1977, Begum has lived and worked in London since 1999, after graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, followed by an MFA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art.
