Sooke Fine Arts Show announces a distinguished panel of jurors

Ken Gillespie, Beth Stuart and Razali May make up the jury for the 39th annual Sooke Fine Arts Show

Sooke’s annual 10-day celebration of artwork – The Sooke Fine Arts Show – is nearly here.

As the anticipation builds for the 39th edition of the event, which includes a gallery of juried artworks, live music, demonstrations, talks, tours and more, the SFAS is highlighting some of this year’s esteemed jurors.

“This year’s SFAS jury panel includes three exceptional and experienced art professionals, all with considerable depth and breadth in their knowledge of the arts,” Jenifer Hayward of the Sooke Fine Arts Society writes in a news release.

Artist Ken Gillespie, visual arts professor Beth Stuart, and gallery owner Razali May are set to review submissions and choose over 350 exceptional art pieces to be displayed in this year’s show.

The three all have unique perspectives that influence their opinion as jurors. Stuart prioritizes “curiosity, a sense of inquiry, experimentation, honesty, and commitment,” while Gillespie looks for basic technical aspects – highlighting the importance of composition, colour combinations, brushwork and confidence. For him, it’s “how the artist moves my eye through the work and the overall impact of how it makes me feel,” Gillespie says.

May has established several galleries over the years. He has been regarded as having a “keen eye for beauty and masterful creativity, and a commitment to mentoring artists in the realities of the business of the arts.”

Their advice for gallery viewers? Pay attention to pieces that spark something in you. “Just step back,” says Gillespie, “and experience how it feels in your gut.”

SFAS is “committed to celebrating artistic excellence and providing a platform for emerging and established artists alike.” They’re confident that with a distinguished jury at the helm, the upcoming show promises to be a showcase of contemporary artistry that inspires, challenges, and captivates audiences.

The Sooke Fine Arts Show will kick off July 25 with the popular Purchasers’ Preview Night. The show will run through Aug. 4, and tickets can be purchased online at sookefinearts.com.
