Liberty Thompson, 23, earned a Fine Art degree from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee in June last year.

Following her degree show, the former Clydeview Academy pupil was nominated by a tutor for the Emerging Art Prize – a competition run by online gallery New Blood Art.

Liberty is one of 24 budding artists from across the UK to be named in a shortlist for this year’s award, with a public vote now underway to help select the winner.

New Blood Art’s scheme aims to bridge the gap between education, entrepreneurship and commercial success in the arts by celebrating the work of “outstanding” recent graduates.

She told the Telegraph: “I’ve never been nominated for something like this.

“I didn’t expect to get anything like this after uni, so it would be nice to get that kind of recognition.

“It’s always great to get support from people you know, but to have someone who doesn’t know you or anything about you believe in your work is really cool.”

Liberty’s exhibition at her degree show focused on portraits of interiors and featured paintings of rooms in her parents’ homes.

Her pieces explore the often overlooked aspects of domestic life, using a vibrant colour palette and soft brush strokes to create a “dreamlike sense of nostalgia”.

She added: “I’ve always loved art. Even at primary school, I’d ask for extra work.

“When I got to high school, it was much the same and art was always my favourite.

“I’d love to make a career out of this.”

Liberty will find out if she has been successful in her bid for  the Emerging Artist title later this year.
