Belfast artist Dawn Crothers — who is best known for her colourful, character-filled snail paintings — has launched a long-awaited debut children’s book. The Snail Artist is now available to buy on the Waterstones’ website and at independent outlets across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

After more than twenty years as one of Northern Ireland’s most beloved visual artists, Dawn’s whimsical world of snails has found a new home in the pages of an illustrated picture book. Her publisher, Glenmillan Press said the book is already capturing the hearts of young readers and their parents, as the story follows the journey of a small but brave snail. The protagonist perseveres with his dream of creating art despite being told he can’t be an artist.

Featuring vibrant oil hand-painted illustrations by Dawn, the tale of The Snail Artist showcases the importance of creativity and its ability to take you anywhere if you believe in yourself. Each page contains colour, imagination and warmth that encourages children to embrace confidence, self-expression and creativity.

Dawn said: “This book is all about imagination. It’s a celebration of creativity and the message that no dream is too small. If a snail can become an artist, then anything is possible.”

Dawn is a member of the Ulster Society of Women Artists and was awarded its President’s Award in 2023.

In the lead-up to the book’s launch, Dawn has been on an inspirational school tour across Belfast, reading The Snail Artist to thousands of children where she led creative workshops that blend storytelling and live art. Her interactive sessions have ignited imaginations in classrooms, encouraging pupils to pick up a paintbrush and explore their own artistic spark.

According to her publisher, teachers and schools have raved about the events Dawn has presented, saying they were “bursting with energy and imagination.”

Mrs Wilson, the principal from Dundela Infants school said the visit was: “Truly inspirational for all the pupils and we can’t wait to have Dawn back in the new year for some art workshops.”

To mark the book’s arrival, Dawn will host a family-friendly launch event on Saturday 8th November at her Studio and Gallery in East Belfast (Lismachan Courtyard, 378a Belmont Road, BT4 2NF). Visitors can enjoy story readings, book signings, and a special exhibition of the original paintings featured in the book. Every book purchased on the day comes with a complimentary print of The Snail Artist cover artwork.

The Snail Artist is available online here.
