AI artist is just following “traditional” musicians with goal to be chart topper

The manager behind Xania Monet, the first AI musician to grab a spot on the mainstream charts, claims they’re doing the same thing as “traditional” artists would by getting on the radio.

Artificial intelligence, AI, has muddied the waters a bit in the music industry. There have been claims of bots being used to pump up streaming numbers over the years, but now there are AI-generated artists making songs.

Xania Monet, the AI project from poet Telisha Jones, is leading the charge on that front. Jones writes the lyrics, but Monet uses an AI-generated model and vocal programs to perform the songs. She has become pretty popular too, getting around 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

At the start of November, Monet also became the first AI artist to break into a mainstream music chart, hitting 20th on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. However, her team isn’t planning to stop there, even despite the backlash.

Xania Monet wants to be #1 on music charts

Monet’s team eventually sees her reaching number one on the charts, as they’re following an “old-school approach” of using the radio to appeal to the masses.

“Her song is resonating with the masses. That was our simple formula,” says Romel Murphy, Monet’s manager, told Billboard. “If you had a, let’s say, traditional, artist and were a label and marketing executive, radio would be a piece of the promotion strategy. We’re interested in bringing the music to as many people as possible.

“Our goal is to continue to grow, continue to connect, and hopefully get to No. 1.”

Murphy also wants listeners to make their decision on things after they’ve listened to Monet’s music, not beforehand.

“Just listen to the songs. Listen to the lyrics. And then make your judgment,” he added.

Billboard also reported that AI artists are charting in non-mainstream charts every week, but Monet is the biggest one to date. There are plenty of AI-generated tracks on Spotify, but making the leap to radio is still a tough one.
