Dua Lipa’s Makeup Artist Shares ‘the Best Trick I Could Ever Teach You’ originally appeared on Parade.

Katie Jane Hughes, a celebrity makeup artist who works with Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber, the founder of KJH beauty and a TikTok star with over 1.2 million followers shared a makeup trick last year that’s changing the way we do our foundation and concealer.

It’s one of Hughes’ top videos, so if you haven’t seen it yet, we are going to break it down for you so that you can up your foundation and concealer game, too. “This is probably the most viral trick that I’ve ever taught,” she says on TikTok.

To get the best concealer and foundation coverage, Hughes recommends priming the brush. By this she means loading a makeup brush with product before applying the brush to your face. She prefers this method to putting concealer directly on the skin and then blending it in with a brush, or to patting it in with a sponge.

Instead, she puts the concealer on the back of her hand, and then forcefully pushes the brush bristles into the product. “Smoosh it into the bristles,” she says. She uses a small brush with fairly dense bristles because “it gives you more control.”

“This should actually be the thing that takes you the longest,” she says in the video. “When the concealer is just pretty much a patch on the back of your hand, it’s ready. You’re going to take that brush and you’re just going to sweep it anywhere that you want coverage.”

She recommends being “very gentle with your pressure,” by not pushing the brush too hard on to the face. In the video, Hughes covers the redness on her face, sweeps it along the top of her brow, and sweeps up from the corners of her eyes to “lift” and then below her cheekbone shadow “to contour.”

Hughes, 41, adds that she’s gotten the most positive feedback for this trick out of her many makeup tutorials. She points out that if you put concealer directly on to the skin, it will “crease quicker” in certain areas, like around the nose. That means “it’s probably more than you need in the first place.”

Hughes ends the video by saying there’s no right or wrong, but this technique saves time and prevents you from using too much product.
